Steamboat Springs has a nickname that tells you almost everything you need to know: Ski Town, USA. What the nickname doesn't tell you is that summer here is just as extraordinary as winter — and for families, it may actually be better.

Tucked into the Yampa Valley in the Routt National Forest of northwestern Colorado, Steamboat Springs sits at 6,700 feet — high enough for cool summer mornings and afternoon thunderstorms, low enough that altitude adjustment is gentle. The town is genuine western Colorado: working ranches surrounding a downtown that still feels like it belongs to the people who live here, a Pro Rodeo that has run every summer for over a century, and natural hot springs that gave the town its name. There are no velvet ropes between the visitors and the locals. Steamboat doesn't work that way.
What it does have is an exceptional summer playground for families. Fish Creek Falls thundering through a granite canyon. The Yampa River winding through the valley floor. Trail riding through aspen groves with the Flat Tops Wilderness behind you. And at the end of every day, hot spring water that has been drawing people to this valley since the Ute used it as a summer hunting ground.
✈️ Getting to Steamboat Springs, Colorado
The nearest airport is Yampa Valley Regional Airport (HDN)
In Hayden, approximately 22 miles west of Steamboat Springs — served by American, United, and Delta with direct connections from Denver, Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and other major hubs. Denver International Airport (DEN) is the larger alternative, about 3 hours by car via US-40 through some of the finest mountain scenery in Colorado.
Emerson & Louise arranges private car pickup from HDN directly to your property — your family arrives at the hotel, not at a rental counter. For families driving from Denver, the US-40 route over Rabbit Ears Pass is the recommended approach: the descent into the Yampa Valley from the pass is one of the great arrival moments in Colorado travel. Plan to reach the valley by early afternoon on Day 1.
🏨 Where to Stay in Steamboat Springs
Steamboat's lodging splits naturally between mountain base properties near the ski area and downtown properties on or near Lincoln Avenue. For summer families, downtown access matters more than ski-lift proximity — here are the three I recommend.

The Steamboat Grand
Best for families who want resort amenities and mountain proximity
The Steamboat Grand is the flagship full-service resort in Steamboat Springs, set at the base of the ski mountain with pool, hot tub, spa, and The Cabin bar and restaurant serving Colorado produce and game on-site. Spacious suites with full kitchens accommodate families comfortably, and the ski valet doubles as gear storage for summer adventure equipment. The free gondola base is steps away — a scenic ride to the mountain summit is one of the signature summer experiences in Steamboat and it starts here.

The Christie Club
Best for families who want space, mountain views, and a private feel
The Christie Club consistently earns top marks from families visiting Steamboat for Fourth of July week and summer in general — spacious two, three, and four-bedroom condominiums with mountain views, full kitchens, and the quiet that comes from a well-run property that takes care of the details. Guests describe it as the ideal base for a family week: enough room for everyone, beautiful setting, and close enough to both the mountain and downtown to access everything without a long drive.

EagleRidge Lodge and Townhomes
Best for larger families or multi-family groups
EagleRidge Lodge sits four miles from the ski resort with a hot tub, outdoor fireplace, pool, spa facilities, and fully equipped townhomes that work exceptionally well for larger groups. The outdoor fireplace becomes the gathering point every evening. For families traveling together — grandparents, cousins, two households sharing one trip — EagleRidge provides the space and amenities that make a multi-family summer week genuinely comfortable rather than just manageable.
🤍 The 4-Day Steamboat Springs Summer Itinerary
Here is exactly how I would build four summer days in Steamboat for a luxury family.
Day 1 | Arrive, Settle, Soak
1:00 PM | Arrival & Check-In
Your private car delivers the family directly to the property from HDN. Unpack, orient the kids, find the pool. Steamboat doesn't require a slow acclimatization the way Crested Butte does — at 6,700 feet you can move comfortably from arrival. Take an hour before you go anywhere.
3:30 PM | First Walk — Lincoln Avenue & Downtown
Steamboat's main street is authentic western Colorado. F.M. Light & Sons — a family-owned western wear store operating since 1905 — is worth a stop and a photograph with the famous horse Lightning outside. The Tread of Pioneers Museum provides context on the Ute history and the valley's ranching past that makes the rest of the trip make more sense.
5:30 PM | Old Town Hot Springs — Late Afternoon Soak
Old Town Hot Springs sits in the heart of downtown and is the right introduction to what makes Steamboat different from every other Colorado mountain town. Eight naturally fed hot spring pools, waterslides for the children, a climbing wall, and adults who look exactly as relaxed as you want to be. Plan two hours.
7:30 PM | Dinner at Aurum Food & Wine
Aurum is the anchor of Steamboat's fine dining scene — locally sourced Colorado cuisine, an exceptional wine list, and a room that feels exactly right for a first dinner in a new mountain town. The elk tenderloin is the order if it's on the menu. Reserve well in advance for summer weekends.

Day 2 | The Signature Day — Horseback & the Rodeo
Day 2 is the day that makes Steamboat feel different from every other luxury mountain destination on the E&L roster. This is the day that is specifically and irreplaceably western Colorado.
8:00 AM | Golden Hour Photography Session — Yampa River Botanic Park
Emerson & Louise arranges a private family photographer to meet you at Yampa River Botanic Park as the morning light hits the valley. Six acres of ponds, berms, and over 40 gardens free to the public — the light here in the first hour of the morning, with the Flat Tops in the background, produces the photographs that get framed.
10:00 AM | Signature Experience — Private Horseback Riding Through the Yampa Valley
This is the experience Emerson & Louise arranges that defines a Steamboat summer trip. A private guided horseback excursion through the working ranch country surrounding the Yampa Valley — through aspen groves and open meadows with the Flat Tops Wilderness as the backdrop. Your guide knows the land, the horses, and the trails that the public-access rides never reach. All riding levels welcome; horses are matched to riders.
1:00 PM | Lunch at Laundry Kitchen & Cocktails
Laundry Kitchen is the locals' choice for midday on Lincoln Avenue — a warm, well-run restaurant in a beautifully converted historic building with a menu that takes Colorado ingredients seriously. Order the burger if you've earned it after a morning on horseback.
3:00 PM | Strawberry Park Natural Hot Springs
While Old Town Hot Springs is the family-friendly option, Strawberry Park is the wild one — a natural hot spring system seven miles north of town in the Routt National Forest, where the springs flow into rock pools alongside a cold mountain creek. The contrast between the hot spring water and the cold creek is what the regulars come for.
7:30 PM | Pro Rodeo at Howelsen Hill
The Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo runs every Friday and Saturday evening from June through August and has done so for over a century. Bull riding, barrel racing, roping competitions — and the Calf Scramble, where young children chase baby animals around the arena for a ribbon tied to their tail. It is genuinely hilarious and the best two hours of family entertainment in Colorado. Get tickets in advance. Arrive early for good seats and the full pre-show atmosphere.

Day 3 | Fish Creek Falls & the Mountain
7:30 AM | Fish Creek Falls — Morning Hike
Fish Creek Falls is the signature natural experience of Steamboat Springs — a 283-foot waterfall thundering through a granite canyon just two miles from downtown. The lower falls are a short, accessible walk; the upper falls require a moderate 1.5-mile hike with 400 feet of elevation gain and reward families with a view that makes the effort immediately worthwhile. Go early before the parking fills. Peak flow is June and July when snowmelt is running strong.
10:30 AM | Steamboat Gondola to the Summit
The Steamboat Gondola runs in summer carrying families to the mountain summit at 10,568 feet for panoramic views of the Yampa Valley, the Flat Tops, and on clear days the Zirkel Wilderness to the north. Mountain biking trails descend from the summit for older children and adults; the summit itself is accessible on foot for younger children and provides one of the finest high-altitude views in Colorado without a strenuous hike. The gondola is free with a Steamboat Resort summer pass — worth purchasing for families spending multiple days.
1:00 PM | Yampa River Tubing
The Yampa River runs through the heart of downtown Steamboat and tubing it is a summer institution. Rent tubes from a local outfitter, float the gentle river corridor through downtown, and spend two hours watching the valley from water level. This is the afternoon activity that perfectly resets the pace after a morning on the mountain. Coolers are allowed. The float ends near downtown for an easy walk back to the property.
4:00 PM | Afternoon Rest & Property Time
Day 3 has covered significant ground. Take the late afternoon at the property — pool, hot tub, or simply a porch with a view. This is the hour that makes the rest of the trip sustainable. Do not skip it.
7:00 PM | Dinner at Hazie's at Steamboat Resort
Hazie's sits at the top of the gondola and offers one of the most dramatic dinner settings in Colorado — mountain views in every direction and a locally sourced menu that earns its location. In summer, the gondola runs for sunset dinner service and the light from the summit as the valley goes golden below you is the kind of moment that makes a trip. Reserve the gondola dinner package in advance.

Day 4 | The Closing Ritual
7:00 AM | Sunrise at Rotary Park Boardwalk
Walk to the Yampa River boardwalk at Rotary Park in the early morning before the town wakes. The river at this hour, the mist off the water, the Flat Tops catching the first light — this is Steamboat at its most private. This is the image you carry home.
8:30 AM | Final Breakfast & One Intentional Conversation
Gather the family for a long breakfast. Ask each person to name their one moment. The horseback morning. The waterfall. The rodeo calf scramble. Teaching children to name the moment they want to carry home is worth more than any souvenir.
10:00 AM | Last Walk on Lincoln Avenue
A final pass through downtown. Pick up one thing specific to Steamboat — something from F.M. Light & Sons, a piece from one of the galleries, a jar of local honey from the farmers market if timing allows. An object that returns you here when you see it.
11:30 AM | Departure
Drive out through Rabbit Ears Pass the way you came in. Let the valley fall away behind you. That quiet in the back seat means the trip did what it was supposed to do.
📝 What Emerson & Louise Handles
Steamboat in peak summer — Fourth of July week and the Rodeo season — books out months in advance. The Christie Club and Steamboat Grand fill quickly for July, and the private horseback outfitters with access to the best ranch terrain book from returning clients first.
As Fora-affiliated luxury travel advisors, Emerson & Louise arranges private car pickup from HDN, secures the horseback guide and the morning photographer simultaneously with your hotel confirmation, books the Hazie's gondola dinner package, and handles the Rodeo tickets before the good seats disappear. We know which properties have the best mountain-facing units and which summer weeks require the most lead time.
The trip you plan yourself will be good. The trip we plan for you will be the one your family returns to.
